Dehoga: “Unprecedented extent”

The decline in demand from restaurateurs, hotels, daycare centers and canteens is clearly noticeable, says Marcus Schwenke, Managing Director of the Wholesale Association Foodservice. Burglaries are to be expected slightly delayed to the hospitality industry. Should bankruptcies in the catering industry increase, this could have dramatic consequences for wholesalers – long after the end of the pandemic, fears the association, which represents providers such as Metro and Selgros / Transgourmet.

The warnings from the Dehoga Hotel and Restaurant Association do not bode well. “The drop in sales is reaching an unprecedented extent,” says Dehoga President Guido Zöllick. Private demand is also falling noticeably: “In the meantime, the entire industry is suffering across the whole of Germany – whether hotels, restaurants, caterers, pubs, bars, discos and clubs, whether company, stadium and public catering” – whether in the city or on the country.

Online business is growing strongly

If you follow the experts from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), however, grocery retailers can expect a sustained increase of 10 to 15 percent not only in Germany “over several weeks”. There are two main drivers: On the one hand, customers store hygiene and health products. On the other hand, people avoided restaurants and spent more time at home.

The online business has recently increased rapidly. However, for fear of infection, consumers could limit their time in the supermarket, which in turn is likely to dampen demand for fresh products.

Which dealers are particularly negatively affected

BCG retail expert Markus Hepp identifies three phases in the coronavirus crisis in Germany. In the first wave of the crisis, products such as disinfectants and cleaning agents were bought to a large extent. In wave two, inventories were formed after it was clear that longer-term effects were to be expected.

Germany is currently in wave three: There are sometimes severe restrictions in social life. This increases the demand for fresh products. Listen to your gut

It’s not about rigid rules. Rather, the advocates advocate a more individual approach. The credo: Everyone’s body knows best what is good for them and what they need right now. The signals to be listened to are appetite, hunger and satiety. So there is no such thing as “forbidden” foods that ultimately lead to cravings. One of the few guidelines is to eat slowly in order to feel the onset of satiety. Nutrition experts have been saying that for a long time.

“Losing weight is not the main idea here, but rather listening to yourself more,” says Röwe. “The big sticking point why this is so hype now could be that nutrition is now a status symbol.” In addition, the core of diets is always the avoidance of something – sweets or chips, for example. “That caused a backlash on the part of people who finally no longer wanted to restrict themselves,” says Röwe.

Trust your instincts

What’s behind it? The nutritionist Uwe Knop describes that children have something ahead of adults: the eating instinct. They trusted that their body would tell them what it wanted – even if it was supposedly “bad” food from an adult point of view, such as white bread, he writes in the book “Child, eat what … you taste!”. Knop makes sense of the children’s choice: white bread provides the energy required for growth faster and is easier to digest than whole-grain bread. Adults, on the other hand, have forgotten how to eat. “When do we still eat out of hunger?” Asks Röwe. “Most eat for other reasons.” Factors such as specified lunch break times and portion sizes as well as the offer that does not always necessarily match your own needs have an influence. “With increasing age, experience and attitudes also have an increasing influence,” says Röwe. Let children try it

Baby-led-weaning (literally: weaning guided by the baby) is the name of the method from the English-speaking world. Above all, parents from the trendy neighborhood know about it very well, says Logar. Hardly anyone there asks about the “porridge system” in their courses on introducing complementary foods. That fits into a time when, for example, the author Hans-Ulrich Grimm (“Rubber zoo makes children happy, sick and fat anyway”) condemns ready-made porridge for babies as fast food – and as a danger to the immune system and a trigger of allergies.

Knowing a lot isn’t always better

There are even more reasons to allow your own intuition instead of outside control: Nutritionists like Knop, but also Maike Ehrlichmann (“Simply eat honestly”) point out the limits of their discipline. Nutrition tables promise orientation – but how well do they fit in individual cases? Ultimately, everyone is different and eats differently, says Ehrlichmann. She considers rules and tips on healthy eating everywhere (“even on the Aldi porridge pack”) to be annoying. During consultations, she sees “that more knowledge does not help people a bit”.

Baby-led weaning, however, can still lead to discussions – not only with grandparents, who used to know it very differently. In addition to the threat of iron deficiency, there is a risk that the babies will choke, said the spokesman for the professional association of paediatricians, Hermann Josef Kahl, the newspaper “Die Welt”. Nadia Röwe is also skeptical: A well-calculated system is missing – and the child’s intuition can also be taken into account by paying attention to hunger and satiety when feeding porridge. Midwife Logar takes it easy: In her experience, most parents end up with a mixed form, which from time to time can even include a glass of porridge.

Even years after his death, the former Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle still saves lives because his way of dealing with leukemia has moved many people. On an anniversary, this is a consolation for his husband Michael Mronz.

A preliminary examination for a knee operation had brought the devastating news for Guido Westerwelle and his husband Michael Mronz on June 17, 2014: Blood cancer was the explanation for the strange blood count of the FDP politician. This started a period of suffering and ups and downs for Westerwelle, until the insidious disease defeated him in March 2016.

On the anniversary of the diagnosis, Michael Mronz has a comforting message: He is certain that Westerwelle has given the impetus with his appearances in recent months that dozens of people owe their lives to. 25,000 requested test sticks

The number comes from DKMS, a non-profit organization that searches for stem cell donors for blood cancer patients. Spokeswoman Julia Runge confirmed to t-online.de: “Guido Westerwelle gave these people a second chance in life.” It could have moved even more people to register. But DKMS is certain of the 80. How so?

Part of the answer is a much larger number: “We can say that around 25,000 people ordered test sets because they were driven by Guido Westerwelle’s fate,” said Runge. 15,000 of them actually put test sticks in their mouths and sent them back. Westerwelle became one of the cases with the greatest response. There are only more new registrations for campaigns when a donor is sought for a child worldwide and the calls are shared enormously.

4,000 test sets alone were ordered with the reason “TV report” when Westerwelle was with Günter Jauch on ARD in November 2015. He had just recovered from a stem cell transplant and seemed to be on the way to recovery. He talked about death, about miserable moments, told how much life means to him and that he has hope. Even after a visit to Markus Lanz on ZDF, viewers asked TV for almost 3,000 tests with the explicit justification.
